History
The administration of this college started on April 1, 2004, under the name “Kolej 16 & 17” at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Skudai (UTM), Johor. It is situated north of the campus, with a picturesque and captivating topography. The location, surrounded by serene valleys, is embraced by the greenery of rubber and palm trees, providing tranquility to every onlooker. In 2008, the college’s name was changed to “Kolej Dato’ Onn Jaafar”.
The primary goal of establishing this college is to offer the best facilities, services, and choices to students who wish to reside on campus, ensuring their well-being as they navigate the life of a UTM student.
The Foundation of the College Name
Dato’ Onn Jaafar was born on February 12, 1895, in Bukit Gambir, Johor. His father, Dato’ Jaafar Muhammad, was the first Menteri Besar of Johor. He received education in England and at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar.
He served in various government positions in Johor and later joined the Military Force on July 5, 1917, as a Cadet. A national champion and distinguished political figure, he founded the UMNO on May 11, 1946, at the Istana Besar in Johor Bahru.
Dato’ Onn was not just a political figure but also a journalist. He was the author and editor of newspapers like Warta Malays and Lembaga Malaya. Some of his notable works include “Buku Selamat Johor” (1936) and the translation of “Hikayat Seribu Satu Malam” titled ‘AL FA LAILA WALAILA.’ As a daring journalist, he expressed criticism through the weekly newspaper ‘KRITIK’ under his leadership.
A powerful orator, Dato’ Onn earned respect as a Member of Parliament. He began facing health challenges in 1961 due to heart and diabetes issues, passing away on January 19, 1962. His funeral received national honors for his immense contributions to the state of Johor and the country as a whole.
